IKEA PAX Assembly Cost in Ottawa: What You’ll Actually Pay

If you’re looking at a PAX wardrobe and wondering what assembly is going to cost in Ottawa, the short answer is: about $125 to $300 for a single wardrobe, and more for a large multi-frame setup, depending on what you’ve ordered.

Putting together one or two PAX frames with a few shelves is fairly straightforward. Add drawers, several doors, pull-out accessories, a taller frame, and wall anchoring, and the job gets considerably more involved.

We list a modular IKEA-type wardrobe at $125 flat, and larger wardrobes at $150 to $300. The actual price depends on the configuration, access, wall construction and what the installer includes.

The best way to get a real price is to send the installer your IKEA order rather than just a photo of the wardrobe.

What affects the price?

The number of frames is the obvious starting point, but it isn’t the only thing that matters.

A PAX with two frames, shelves and a couple of clothes rails is a much simpler job than two frames with six drawers, multiple doors and a collection of KOMPLEMENT accessories.

The main things that affect labour are:

  • Number of PAX frames
  • Frame height and size
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Number of drawers
  • Interior accessories
  • Wall anchoring
  • Access to the room
  • Whether the wardrobe is new or already assembled
  • Whether existing furniture needs to be moved

This is why two wardrobes with similar IKEA price tags can have noticeably different assembly costs.

A rough Ottawa price guide

There isn’t one standard price for PAX assembly in Ottawa. Installers use different pricing models, and IKEA’s assembly service has its own pricing system.

Here is what we list:

What it coversPrice
Corner or modular IKEA-type wardrobe$125
Sliding, mirror or glass-door wardrobeFrom $99
Built-in, fitted or walk-in systemFrom $149
Larger wardrobe or dresser$150 to $300
PAX section, plus each door$177 per section, $25 per hinged door, $75 per sliding door

A flat price suits a single wardrobe. A wall of several PAX frames is priced per section: three sections with six hinged doors comes to 3 × $177 plus 6 × $25 = $681.

Installers price differently. A straightforward installation may come in below these figures, while difficult access, unusual wall conditions or a complicated configuration can push the price higher.

If someone gives you a quote that’s substantially different, that doesn’t automatically mean the quote is unreasonable. Check what’s actually included.

The IKEA order matters more than the wardrobe photo

When you ask someone for a quote, don’t just send a picture from IKEA’s website.

Send the actual shopping list or order confirmation.

For example, there’s a big difference between:

Three PAX frames with shelves and clothes rails

and:

Three 100 cm frames, 236 cm high, hinged doors, six KOMPLEMENT drawers, eight shelves, two clothes rails and several pull-out accessories.

The second description tells the installer what they’re actually dealing with.

It also makes quotes easier to compare. If one person quotes $300 for the complete installation and another quotes $225 for “PAX assembly,” you need to know whether both prices cover the same work.

What should be included?

Before agreeing to a price, ask exactly what the installer considers part of the job.

For a normal installation, you may want the quote to cover:

  • PAX frame assembly
  • Joining the frames
  • Shelves and clothes rails
  • Doors
  • Drawers
  • KOMPLEMENT accessories
  • Positioning the wardrobe
  • Wall anchoring
  • Adjusting doors and drawers

Anchoring is particularly worth asking about. A wardrobe isn’t finished just because all the pieces have been assembled.

Also ask about things that might cost extra, such as moving furniture, cutting or modifying baseboards, disposal of packaging, or dealing with missing or damaged IKEA parts.

Doors can make a difference

Hinged doors add hinges and adjustment.

With several doors, getting the gaps even and the doors sitting correctly takes additional installation time.

Sliding doors are a different matter. They require rails to be installed and the door panels to be aligned so they run correctly.

If you’re comparing two quotes, make sure the installer knows which door system you’ve ordered.

Drawers are another labour factor

Drawers are easy to overlook when estimating the job.

A wardrobe with three frames and shelves isn’t the same assembly job as a three-frame wardrobe containing six or eight KOMPLEMENT drawers.

Each drawer has its own pieces and runners, and the finished drawers may need adjustment once everything is installed.

The same applies to pull-out trays, shoe storage and other interior fittings.

Don’t forget the 236 cm frame

If you’re considering the taller PAX frame, measure the room before ordering it.

The issue isn’t simply whether the ceiling is taller than the wardrobe. The frame needs enough clearance to be assembled and positioned correctly.

This becomes particularly important when the ceiling height is close to the minimum required clearance.

IKEA’s current PAX product information provides specific clearance requirements for upright assembly, and some configurations, including sliding-door wardrobes, require additional clearance.

If you’re close to the minimum, check the current IKEA instructions for the exact configuration you’re buying and give the measurement to the installer before the appointment.

It’s much easier to solve a clearance problem before the boxes arrive.

Wall anchoring

PAX wardrobes need to be secured against tipping in accordance with IKEA’s instructions.

The correct fastening method depends on the wall.

Drywall over wood framing, plaster and lath, concrete and brick aren’t interchangeable. A fastener that’s appropriate for one wall may not be appropriate for another.

If you’re not sure what’s behind the wall, tell the installer. They can determine what type of fastening is appropriate for the substrate.

Before drilling, the installer should also consider the possibility of electrical wiring or plumbing in the wall.

Baseboards can get in the way

Baseboards are another small detail that can affect the installation.

If the baseboard sticks out farther than the wardrobe can accommodate, the PAX may not sit where you expect it to.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the baseboard needs to be removed or cut.

There are different ways of dealing with the gap, depending on the room and how you want the finished wardrobe to look. Discuss it with the installer before anyone starts cutting anything.

What about condos?

For a condo, the wardrobe itself may not be the difficult part.

Building logistics can be.

Check whether your building requires:

  • An elevator reservation
  • Specific delivery hours
  • A loading area
  • Proof of insurance from contractors
  • Restrictions on drilling
  • Limits on when installation work can be done

If the installer is bringing the boxes from another part of the building, mention that when requesting the quote.

Concrete walls aren’t necessarily a problem. They simply require an appropriate installation method and suitable fasteners.

IKEA assembly vs. a local installer

IKEA Canada offers assembly through Taskrabbit, so that’s one option worth checking.

IKEA Canada says its assembly service starts at $45, with the rate based on the items you book and the final cost calculated at checkout.

That doesn’t mean a PAX installation will cost $45. A large wardrobe with multiple frames, doors and drawers is obviously a different job from a small IKEA item.

A local furniture assembler may also give you a single price for the complete PAX installation.

The important comparison isn’t just the final number. Look at what you’re getting for it.

For example, if one quote includes six drawers, doors, anchoring and positioning while another only covers frame assembly, they’re not really competing on the same job.

What should you send an installer?

A good quote request doesn’t need to be complicated.

Send:

  1. Your IKEA order or shopping list
  2. A photo of the wall
  3. The ceiling height
  4. The floor you’re on
  5. Information about stairs or elevators
  6. A photo of any tight access areas
  7. Whether the PAX is new or already partly assembled

If you know what the wall is made from, include that too.

The installer can then tell you if they need anything else.

What if IKEA delivered a missing part?

Tell the installer before they arrive.

A missing door or drawer package can prevent the job from being completed, and you may end up needing another visit.

It’s worth checking the delivery before scheduling assembly, particularly if you’ve ordered a large configuration with a lot of separate packages.

You don’t necessarily need to open every box. Make sure the packages listed on your order have arrived and keep them organized.

Can an existing PAX be moved?

Usually, yes, but don’t plan on carrying a fully assembled tall PAX across the house.

For a move, a tall PAX will usually need to be emptied, disassembled, transported as separate components, and rebuilt in the new location.

The usual process is roughly:

  • Remove the contents
  • Take out drawers and interior fittings
  • Remove the doors
  • Remove the wall anchoring
  • Disassemble the frames
  • Move the components
  • Reassemble everything
  • Anchor the wardrobe again

If you’re hiring someone for the move, tell them that the PAX is already assembled when asking for a price.

Moving and rebuilding an existing wardrobe isn’t the same job as assembling a new one from unopened packages.

How much time should you allow?

The answer depends on the configuration.

A small PAX can be completed relatively quickly. A large wardrobe with several frames, doors and drawers can take a significant part of a day, particularly if access is awkward.

IKEA/Taskrabbit’s published information gives a broad estimate of roughly one to four hours per PAX module, with the actual time depending on the configuration.

Don’t treat that as a promise for your particular wardrobe. It is a broad indication of why a large PAX can take considerably longer than a basic flat-pack item.

How to avoid paying for a second visit

The easiest way to avoid problems is to prepare the room before the installer arrives.

Have the following ready:

  • All IKEA packages
  • Enough floor space to assemble the frames
  • A clear path to the installation area
  • The ceiling measurement
  • Information about the wall
  • Building access arranged if necessary

If there is furniture where the PAX is going, decide beforehand who is moving it.

Also make sure everyone agrees about where the wardrobe is going before it gets anchored to the wall.

So, what should you actually budget?

For a single modular PAX wardrobe, flat rates start at about $125, and larger wardrobes run $150 to $300.

Built-in, fitted or walk-in systems start at $149, but a larger multi-frame wardrobe with doors, drawers and accessories may be quoted per section instead.

For a large wall-to-wall installation priced per section, our rates put three sections with six hinged doors at about $681, with sliding doors at $75 each instead of $25.

But don’t use those numbers as a substitute for getting a quote.

The configuration matters too much.

A good quote should tell you exactly what the installer is assembling, whether anchoring is included, whether they’ll position the wardrobe, and what happens if something is missing from the IKEA delivery.

If you send the complete IKEA order rather than just saying “I need a PAX assembled,” you’ll usually get a much more useful answer.

One final point: for an accurate price, get a quote based on your actual PAX order and installation conditions.
