Gazebo, Pergola & Shed Assembly
Why Outdoor Kits Go Wrong More Often Than Indoor Ones
A gazebo or shed kit is a different animal from a bookcase. The part count runs into the hundreds, the panels are heavy and awkward for one person, and almost every one of them assumes a flat, square, level base that most backyards do not actually have. Build on an out-of-level base and the errors compound: the frame racks, the roof panels stop meeting at the ridge, and the doors that lined up during assembly bind once the sun has been on them for a week. We check and shim the base before the first upright goes in, keep the frame square as it rises rather than correcting at the end, and torque fasteners in the sequence the manufacturer specifies so the structure loads evenly.
Anchoring, Wind and the Ottawa Winter
Anchoring is not optional here
A gazebo or shelter is a large sail. Every one of these kits ships with anchors for the base it is designed to sit on – concrete, deck or ground – and using the right ones for your surface is the difference between a structure that stays put and one that ends up in a neighbour's yard.
The base decides the build
Concrete pad, deck boards, patio stone and compacted gravel each take a different fixing. We confirm what you have before the visit so the right anchors are on the van.
Soft tops come down for winter
Fabric-canopy gazebos are not designed to carry a snow load, and manufacturers generally direct that the canopy is removed for the season. We can take it down and refit it in spring as a separate booking.
Book the weather, not just the date
These are outdoor builds. We keep an eye on the forecast and would rather move a booking by a day than assemble a roof panel in the wind.
Our Process
How an Outdoor Build Runs
1
Confirm the kit and the base
Model, box count, and what the structure will stand on – pad, deck, stone or gravel.
2
Check and shim level
The base is measured before assembly starts, because nothing above it can be squared later.
3
Frame up and square
Uprights and beams set and checked on the diagonal before the roof goes on.
4
Anchor and clear
Fixed down with the correct anchors for your surface, packaging flattened and removed.
Furniture Assembly Ottawa builds gazebos, pergolas, sun shelters and storage sheds across Ottawa, ON. These are the kits people most often start on a Saturday morning and abandon by mid-afternoon – several hundred parts, panels too heavy and awkward for one person, and instructions that assume a perfectly level base.
The season is short, so booking matters
Outdoor assembly in Ottawa runs from roughly May through October, and demand concentrates hard at the front of it. Backyard structures bought in a spring sale tend to sit in their boxes until the first genuinely warm weekend, which is exactly when everyone else wants one built too. If your kit has arrived, it is worth booking the build before the weather turns good.
What we need from you
A prepared, level base – concrete pad, deck, patio stone or compacted gravel – and confirmation of what it is, so the correct anchors come with us. We will also ask you to confirm the box count against the manual before the day. Large outdoor kits ship on pallets and a missing box is far better discovered a week early than at the point the frame is standing.
What we hand back
A structure that is square, level, fixed down with the anchors specified for your surface, with doors and roof panels aligned and the packaging flattened and gone. On soft-top gazebos we will also point out what needs doing before the first snow.
Gazebo, Pergola & Shed Assembly – FAQs
How long does a gazebo take to assemble?
Most hard-top gazebos are a full-day two-person build; larger pavilions and louvered pergolas can run longer. Sheds vary widely – a resin shed on a prepared base is quicker than a wood-frame kit. We give you a realistic window with the quote rather than an optimistic one.
Do I need to have a base ready before you arrive?
Yes. We assemble the structure but do not pour concrete or lay a patio. A level concrete pad, deck, patio stone or well-compacted gravel base needs to be in place. Tell us what you have and we will confirm it suits the kit.
Can you anchor it to a deck rather than concrete?
Yes, with the correct hardware for deck framing. It matters that the anchors land in structural members rather than just the deck boards, which is something we check on site.
Will you take the canopy down before winter?
We can, as a separate seasonal booking. Fabric canopies are generally not rated for snow load, so leaving one up through an Ottawa winter risks the frame as well as the fabric.
What if the kit is missing parts?
We identify the exact part number from the manual so you can request a replacement, and complete everything possible in the meantime. On large outdoor kits this is worth checking before the build day, so we will often ask you to confirm the box count in advance.
Do you assemble sheds bought second-hand or already used?
Often yes, but tell us up front. Reassembling a shed that has been taken apart once usually means missing hardware and panels that no longer sit true, so it is quoted differently from a new kit.
